Spurs are reeling from back-to-back defeats before the international break but Ange Postecoglou’s side still sit just two points off the top of the Premier League table. But, and a huge but, they’ve lost key players in Micky van de Ven and James Maddison to injury, Cristian Romero remains out suspended and the way they collapsed late on in their defeat at Wolves last time out all leads us to believe their incredible early-season form is way behind them. Tottenham go for it in every game under Ange (well, except for against Wolves) and he’s had the international break to work with his patched-up defensive unit to try and sort things out. Spurs’ squad players need to step up, big time, over the next month or so to keep their season on track.
Aston Villa are just one point behind Tottenham heading into this weekend as Unai Emery’s side have won three of their last four and are unstoppable at home in the Premier League as they beat Fulham at Villa Park before the break for their 13th-straight home win. Juggling European action with the PL hasn’t been a problem so far and Villa look set to push for a top four finish and make a deep run in the UEFA Europa Conference League. With John McGinn pulling the strings, Emiliano Martinez a brick wall in goal and Ollie Watkins banging them in up top, this Villa side are an extremely settled unit and Emery has them set up to punish teams on the counter. In theory, this game sets up very well tactically for Villa.

The strength of Tottenham’s squad remains a concern but they will have Destiny Udogie back this weekend at left back, while Romero will be back after the trip to Manchester City on Dec. 3. The way Postecoglou wants to play demands bravery, especially from the defenders, and Tottenham have to stay patient and keep playing the ball out of the back and pressing high up the pitch. That is very tough to do against an Aston Villa side who are so dangerous on the counter and that is what makes this game so intriguing. Romero and Yves Bissouma are both suspended for this game and van de Ven and Maddison remain out, while Richarlison is also out and long-term issues leave Spurs without Ryan Sessegnon, Manor Solomon and Alfie Whiteman. Pape Matar Sarr is also struggling with a knock and is set to have a late fitness test.

Unai Emery says that Villa are dreaming of finishing in the Champions League spots but if they win this game, they’ll be right up in their in the title battle. That may be a step too far for Villa but Emery has done a remarkable job and Villa are perhaps the best-coached team in the PL. Getting a marquee win like this will give them further belief they can keep climbing the table. Tyrone Mings and Emiliano Buendia remain out with their ACL injuries, while Diego Carlos could be fit for this game and Jacob Ramsey is also getting closer to full fitness. There are also doubts over Leon Bailey, Nicolo Zaniolo, Matty Cash, John McGinn and Emiliano Martinez.
